Simple Remedies for the Skin

It’s reassuring to know that what you put on your skin is natural and safe so nothing beats making your own beauty products. You know exactly what is in them, you can customise them to your skin type and you know the value of the ingredients you are paying for.

We are big fans of the natural ingredients found in New Zealand and Manuka Honey is one of our favourites. It’s a totally natural product that is unique to New Zealand and due to its non-peroxide antibacterial activity it is a powerful skin healer. Not only is it great for restoration but Manuka Honey also draws moisture into the skin making it a great ingredient for keeping skin supple.

Here are our top five homemade beauty products using Manuka Honey from New Zealand. We recommend using a UMF rated honey at 15+ or greater for the best benefits as the antibacterial activity will be significant enough to show results. Honey throughout these recipes refers to New Zealand Manuka Honey but we have used honey for ease.

Honey Facial Cleanser

The best way to cleanse the skin is with an oil base. The oil will remove the impurities on the skin when washed away and the honey will soothe and moisturise. Combine a teaspoon of honey with a tablespoon of coconut oil and combine so that it creates a texture that will slide across your skin. Massage on to your face as this will help to loosen make up and impurities. Wash off with warm water and your skin will be left clean and supple.

Honey Bath Soak

Honey is a great moisturiser and complexion booster so it is perfect for a relaxing bath that helps boost the health of your skin too. Add one cup of honey to a warm bath and swirl around so it disperses. Soak for 15 minutes before adding half a cup of baking soda. The baking soda is a natural exfoliator so along with the honey your skin will be left feeling soft and glowing.

Honey Face Mask

Honey is great for acne, anti-ageing and a general complexion boost. A face mask is a great way to get the benefits of honey to the skin in just 10 minutes. Spritz your face with rose water then apply a thin layer of honey to the damp skin. The honey will draw the moisture from the rose water into the skin. Leave for 10 minutes or longer, if you have the time, then risk off with warm water. This is a totally natural recipe that will feed your skin and leave you looking fresh.

Gentle Honey Exfoliator

Honey and baking soda are a great combination for removing dead skin cells and replenishing the skin. You can also use the combination of ingredients on your face as a natural exfoliator that you can apply three times a week. Combine 1 tablespoon of honey with half a tablespoon of Baking Soda and gentle apply to the skin in circular movements for a few minutes. Wash off with warm water to leave a glowing complexion.

Honey Spot Treatment

Honey is great for acne skin or the odd problem pimple. Simply apply the honey to the problem area using a cotton bud and leave for 10 minutes before washing off with warm water. As honey is a skin healer your skin should be improved in appearance.
