Mount Somers Honey – A Southern Gem

We love it when we come across a company that represent the integrity of the New Zealand Honey industry at its best and produce delicious, honest products too.  We were lucky enough to speak to Midland Honey as they take their 90 year old honey company to new heights. Apart from an impressive history and the fact that Midland are the largest producers of honey in the South Island, the thing that impressed us the most was their ownership of the process. With over 8000 beehives, that are all their own, Midland are able to control and account for their honey production from hive to home. The hives are located on the pristine foothills and the fertile plains of the Southern Alps.

Having traditionally focused on bulk honey sales Midland Apiaries are taking an exciting step forward and putting their name on their labels and building their own brand. Mount Somers is the southern gem we have discovered and it is heading over the shores to the likes of Hong Kong, China and will soon be in the USA. Named after a local landmark, Mount Somers is on the eastern flank of the Southern Alps that overlook the Canterbury Plains on the South Island of New Zealand.

Small but Premium Range of Honey

The range of honey varieties is small but they cover the essentials in premium honey with some interesting varietals added in. The clover honey stands out. It has beautiful floral notes and is a lovely pale gold. It is creamy in texture and also a little runnier making it perfect for adding into hot drinks and desserts. Interestingly, Midland Apiaries, that are also a seed producer, grow the most substantial clover crop in New Zealand according to their Sales & Marketing Director, James Annabell.   With the abundance of clover this means the bees are literally forced to feed exclusively on white clover. Another rising star in their range is unique Honeydew that Midland claim is full of antioxidants. Stay tuned to find out more about this undiscovered gem with our upcoming review.

Midland Honey is on the lookout for a distributor in the US so please contact us if you would like to know more.
